Pain
What if there is an issue during surgery?
Mercy Surgery Center staff are highly trained to be prepared for all scenarios during surgery. Additionally, a second location of Mercy's emergency department is also located on the ground level in the event of critical situations.
Do I need someone to accompany me and/or drive me home?
You must have someone to accompany you on the day of surgery, drive you home, and stay with you for 24 hours or your surgery will be cancelled.
Guests who accompany patients are highly encouraged to stay at Mercy Surgery Center for the duration of your loved one's procedure. This policy ensures:
1. You are able to participate in the post-surgical update with the surgeon.
2. You can meet with your loved one as they come out of anesthesia.
3. Your loved one is able to be discharged in a timely manner.
Thank you for your support!
What can I eat or drink and what medications can I take before surgery?
Can I stay overnight?
No, the Hiawatha location provides same-day procedures only; surgeries requiring an overnight stay are performed at the main hospital in downtown Cedar Rapids.
